Make magazine
Got my first issue of Make magazine yesterday. Cover price is 14.99! I had no idea it cost that much when I asked for a subscription to it for Xmas. I'll be sure to take care of these Make magazines, these will never go in the bathroom. 15 bucks for a magazine, and no nudity, wow.

Conumdrum
What to do? The phone system at work can accept various devices for music on hold. Big boss man made some funky connection to a radio that doesn't work anymore. I suggested we get an mp3 player and hook that up to the Toshiba thing. My problem is that I know legally the company should pay licensing fees for any music in the phone system. It'd be so cool to have some really strange music on hold. I know I can get away with it, but the legal thing makes me want to not do it.

Vitelity is my new VOIP provider
Screw you Telasip, you don't reply to support emails and your website sucks. I've signed up with Vitelity and their website is awesome! They give you screen shots of what you should put into Trixbox to make it work. Not just sample screen shots, but screen shots of what your individual settings should be. I won't be porting a number so I'll have another new phone number that will hopefully work better than the Telasip one did, and better than the Broadvoice one. How can I cancel my Telasip if they don't read their email...I guess I'll call them on my new Vitelity number and leave a message because they don't answer the phone either, failing that I'll be doing chargebacks to my credit card.

TiVo Doesn't like VoIP
Shoot, can't use my VoIP to set-up the RCA DVR40 I got for free. These things like to phone home but won't work with VoIP, might work with an external modem, the setup process even says not to use a digital PBX system, it voids the warranty. I guess my next step is to hack it since I have no "real" phone. From the very limited research I've done I'm looking at using PTVnet first then using InstantCake. Not sure what all that enables me to do, but it'll be a good starting point.
Part of hacking the DVR40 involves deconstructing my trixbox 'cause I need it's 200 gig drive for the TiVo, that leaves the trixbox with a 160 (or is it 120?) gig drive, should be plenty of room to record phone calls. Boom! Done, took apart the trixbox, reinstalled it and got it working again, in maybe 120 minutes max.
Tomorrow we'll begin taking apart the DVR40.
Update: After some real research it would cost $40 bucks for those two things I mentioned, now I'm looking at using something called "The Zipper" which is free.
Update: The Zipper requires Windows which is bullshit, it's just a batch file that does some stuff, it could be rewritten to use Applescript, too lazy myself to do it. I'll take it to work and run the stupid batch file there, no more Windows on my Mac, never again!
Update: Fuck it, I'll use one of the three windows machines I have that aren't really mine and Hinsdale's guide, I've done it before so it shouldn't be a problem. The real problem is I think I'll need a usb to ethernet or wireless usb card that works with the Tivo. Free things are never really free. BTW the software on the "free" tivo is 6.2-01-2-321, the 321 is for RCA DVR40, so it's not the 6.2a I wanted, but it shouldn't matter if I'm adding all the hacks myself. Oh, and the torrent I was d/l is for a Sony series 1 version, no clue if it would've worked or not, probably not.

Ouch, scrot skin
Ouch, reminder to self, do not wear zipper fly pants without underwear. Was zipping up and caught some scrotum skin in the zipper, minor bleeding, no big deal. Who knew there was a message in "There's Something About Mary"?

Dying TiVo
Damn Damn Damn, my stupid TiVo is dying, it just rebooted itself, this means I'm not going to get all of the Futurama episodes I should. Cartoon Network (Adult Swim) is showing all of them back to back. I need to talk to that guy at work who said he has a DirecTiVo he's not using... wonder if it's the Philips model I have? I'm sure what's dying is the drive inside.
Update: That guy at work gave me his DirecTivo, it's an RCA DV40, a Series 2 unit, sweet! Better than my dying Philips DSR6000.
Update: I have to get a new access card for the used DV40 to work, 20 bucks (almost an hour on the phone to find that out, via VoIP). Man that thing is slooowww, it had 5 or so shows on it, no porn. Hopefully wiping the drive will speed it up.

Comcast! You lied.
Comcast didn't cancel my internet service. How do I know? I just got a new bill, plus the internet light never went out on my cable modem. I should've asked for a confirmation code when I called to cancel a few weeks ago. Assholes don't let you cancel past "normal working hours" or via the internet. Wonder if it's 'cause the phone number I used when I signed up isn't mine anymore... I'll update my profile online before I call again to cancel. Maybe you can cancel if you choose a different menu choice...
Update, just talked to Shannon in customer service and she reassured me I will be disconnected as of the 31st, and she gave me a cancellation code /688773>number. We shall see Shannon, we shall see. I recall the person I talked to before telling me that service would be cut off as soon as I cancelled. Damn! Should've got Shannon's last name too.
Update, cable light went out on the modem on 1/1/08. Shannon didn't lie.

VOIP on iPod Touch? Why not iPhone...
Some industrious fellows have apparently managed to get VOIP to work on the iPod Touch with use of an add on microphone. In anticipation of them or somebody else getting it to work on the iPhone using it's built-in mic, I have re-setup my trixbox (aka semi-user friendly Asterisk distro). It only took me a few days this time, and I'm pretty sure it works, still playing around with settings, should probably be using Telasip's Seattle DNS info...
My currently working FreePBX Trunk info for using Telasip's San Francisco DNS:
;allow=g729
allow=ulaw&gsm
canreinvite=no
context=from-trunk
disallow=all
fromdomain=sip.sfo.telasip.com
fromuser=joeuser
host=sip.sfo.telasip.com
insecure=very
qualify=yes
secret=joeuserpass
sendrpid=yes
type=peer
username=joeuser
My currently working FreePBX Register String:
joeuser:joeuserpass@sip.sfo.telasip.com
I couldn't find clear instructions anywhere and just guessed what to put after the @ in the Register String. joeuser is your Telasip username and joeuserpass is your Telasip password, if you are a Telasip customer.
