Cool, no stable needed

Always wanted a horse, not really, but I would like a horse head pillow. My birthday is coming up...I don't celebrate birthdays. If someone wants to give me a horse head pillow I'd accept it, but I'm not asking for birthday presents. I finally got the rebate check for the Hitachi hard drive I bought for my still incomplete HD-MythTv box. Forgot about that rebate, maybe I'll use the 80 bucks to buy a horse head pillow. Why do rebate checks look like junk mail postcards? Almost threw it out. Make magazine has an article about building your own DVR, havn't read the whole thing yet, I'm lazy.

On a side note, wanted to give kudos to my nephew who after much consternation has successfully setup his Netgear wireless card in Fedora Core 3. The sad part is that he has to use a Windows driver as Netgear doesn't support linux.

Even more reason to hate Tiger Direct

Tiger Direct is suing Apple because Apple has named their new operating system Tiger, infringing on their trademark. I think Tiger Direct actually has a case. Sucks to be Apple with Tiger available for sale tomorrow. Gosh, I want to buy the new Apple OS Tiger directly...can't do it at TigerDirect.com. Maybe Tiger Direct is really wanting to become an authorized Apple reseller. I think I'm on Jaguar, but never refer to it as Jaguar, I call it OSX 10.3. System info tells me I'm running Mac OS X 10.3.9 no animal names just numbers.

What? Mario on Atari? Who knew.

I'd love to have one of these Mario Bros. Atari cartridges. I was 12 when this game came out, don't remember ever seeing the commercial. That was such a long time ago. My memory sucks, might've seen this commercial everyday after school and I wouldn't remember. Who knows, I might've even had this game for my Atari. It's neat to see Mario on a system other than Nintendo. Stupid Italian plumber, how can you fight a gorilla all by yourself?

More positive news as I'm an apple fanboy

Take that Redmond! Apple takes top spot on Wired 40 list. According to a very mac friendly source Apple is kicking butt in something. Probably profit margins on hardware.

Oh and my rebate on the cable modem is finally going through, forgot about that rebate. I didn't buy it from those piss poor rebate fullfillers at Tiger Direct. The modem was bought from...trying to remember... ZipZoomFly.com. I will never buy anything with a rebate from Tiger Direct, too many bad experiences.

Repeat, don't buy rebate stuff from Tiger Direct ever!

An interesting rebate story, sent in a rebate I knew was past the turn in date and will be getting the rebate after all. Not sure who to thank, Radio Shack or Verizon for honoring it.

Xbox and Kai on the Mac

I don't get it. Tried to set up my junk to use the Xbox and the free muliplayer Kai Xlink thingy. Created a Kai account (p00pship if you want to battle me), put their firmware on my router, engine is running, no dice. Shit don't work. Changed the en0 (wired) to en1 (wireless) in the preferences cuz I'm wireless. No consoles show up in the user interface. I'm sure I'm missing something really simple and I'll feel even more like an ass when I figure out what it is.

update: Mech_ass_all_out won't work for me. I'll try it with the only other Xbox game I have, Crimson Skies, I need a review copy of "Doom 3" for the Xbox, who do I ask for that?

New Edge Networks suck

I'm hating on New Edge Networks because they can't figure out that I've cancelled my DSL service, they keep charging my credit card. I called up to cancel and the dude told me to do it online, so I did, and now they don't think I did, but I did do it, and I have the emails to prove it. I hate the outsourcing of support or billing, or whatever. Asshats can check to see what activity has been on that IP address, should be zero since I haven't had an active residential phone line for a month. And I sold my DSL modem on Ebay. Arrrghhh

I need money

Haven't managed my personal finances very well this month. I'll be oweing money all over town soon. Maybe I should fake my own kidnapping...

Big Lebowski moment over

Need that hundred bucks I put into an ING Direct savings account. As a Tivo user I got a 25 dollar bonus by opening the account. Might be able to meet my obligations if I deplete my savings.

No idea how accurate this is, but you can take an internet speed test here. I got a 4.52 Mpbs down and 427 Kbps up on the last test I took. Feel bad as a Mac user using a windows site to test my connection.

Ahh, but you don't get high

Neat, I thought it was pretty much legal to smoke pot in Canada, now multiple sclerosis sufferers who want the government to pay can get relief from a newly approved cannabis based mouth spray. I would've called it "Cannabiseptic". Does it come in different flavors? I wonder if it does get you high ... one of the main ingredients is THC...interesting...where did I put my passport? Oh that's right, I don't have one. Darn.

Bible Dolls!

I'm not buying these dolls unless they are anatomically correct. It's pre-order right now. Judging by the pictures on the website they are cheaply made, skin colors don't match on the bodies and heads. It's obvious that the heads are the kind that you can easily squeeze and yank off the body. Doesn't King David get his head chopped off at some point? I guess that's one reason to have an easy pop off head.

NIN newness

This is another reason to buy a Mac. Nine Inch Nails has released the new single as a GarageBand track so anybody can remix it.

Track doesn't load well in the version of GarageBand I have. Wonder if the new Tiger comes with GarageBand? I'll be upgrading to that soon.

ipodderX ???

Why? What does this pay for program do that I couldn't do for free? I'm using iPodder, a free program, to download podcasts. I hate to think some OSX user thinks they can't use a program unless it has an X at the end of it's name.

If that's the case I should make a version of Firefox called FirefoX and charge money for it. I guess I'd have to trademark FirefoX to make it legal.

If Comcast is your internet provider...

You might want to change your DNS settings because there's been a rash of Comcast DNS outages recently. The comments suggest changing your DNS to Verizon DNS servers, or old leftover AT&T Broadband DNS servers that weren't taken down when Comcast bought AT&T's cable stuff. I've changed mine to an average of Comcast and Verizon DNS. To do this just add the IP addresses up and divide by the number of servers you added together. For instance, Verizon's DNS servers are 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2, and 4.2.2.3, one of Comcast's DNS servers is 68.87.66.196. Add them up to get 80.93.72.202, then divide by 4, and then that's your primary DNS server, simple really, and reliable.

Oh, and it's also complete BS, don't try it, it won't work. I was making a joke. The not funny kind.

VOIP woes

I done learnt that to get the best from VOIP I need a QoS server, or Quality of Service server. The purpose of the QoS server is to prioritize VOIP traffic over other internet traffic. Learnt it 'cuz I had a problem with VOIP and streaming internet radio. VOIP would disconnect after 2 minutes if I was listening to an internet radio station at the same time. Gee wiz, maybe it's not a rip off to pay the phone company for dial tone...

Or maybe I'm an idiot and you can buy routers that do QoS...can my Linksys router do that if I put Seasoft junk on it...????

Maybe if I update my firmware, can't do it as it is now on version 2.02.7.

Need to update firmware and see what options I get.

Updated firmware unrecommended way, wirelessly. Now I have QoS stuff!

That was odd...

Guess my niece is missing...

My sis must've been calling numbers from caller id looking for her. Sis didn't recognize my new number, or my voice when she called asking if she was here. I kinda laughed, since she didn't recognize my voice, and I didn't identify myself as her brother, no clue what she thought. All I said was that she wasn't here. Does VOIP distort my voice?

Peek into my brain

Got to thinking why I think it's ok to get tv shows off the internet, and not ok to get mp3s off the internet without paying for them somehow, unless of course they are freely offered by the artist.

Broadcast TV is free. That means your CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, PBS, PAX, WB, whatever that is broadcast over the air is fair game. What does it matter how I get it? Right now I'm downloading The Amazing Race, and I'll be Tivoing the same episode. I'll probably have watched the Tivoed version before the bittorrent version is fully downloaded. I won't watch any of the commericals no matter how I got it.

TV shows that are on cable or satellite should be only available to people who pay for cable or satellite tv. I pay for Directv, so any show that's not on a pay channel I can get any way I choose. The headache is that by using Bittorrent I'm distributing at the same time I'm downloading, so I'm probably helping someone who's not a cable or satellite subscriber steal a program.

My head hurts...can't justify stealing anymore right now...more to
come...

Skipping over the non-cable or satellite subscriber issue.

Let's talk music.

An argument one might make, "It's on the radio, how is that different than broadcast tv?" It's not. Go ahead and record the radio. Internet radio stations...some of them are paying the fees regular radio stations pay...can you record that legally? Don't know. Oh my head hurts.

-

Is this legal?

Oh boy, download TV shows using bittorrent. It's only gonna take 8 1/2 hours to download Dr. Who. I should really get Robot Chicken, that show is only 15 minutes I think ... 6 hours to download a 15 minute show. Think I'll only use this for stuff I can't get any other way, or not at all, because I'm not sure it's legal...

Hitachi DeathStar Rebates at Compusa

80 dollar mail in rebate on 200 gig Hitachi DeskStar hard drives from Compusa. In store only, limit one per household. I wouldn't recommend Hitachi drives for any data you really want to keep. I'm putting one into the MythTV box I'm building, don't care if it dies or not, it's only TV. At 80 bucks after rebate, so what if the Death Star explodes?

Post updated with a slightly clearer picture. Haven't got the rebate yet...what's up with that?

Stupid internet phone

Damn it! First the Pope dies, then my internet phone doesn't work. The phone actually wasn't working right yesterday either. If I place a call everything is super, if a call comes in I can hear fine, but the caller can't hear me, this is very annoying. Time for some tech support.

update: it works again, never got any reply from tech support. Not sure if they did anything.

update: doesn't work.

update: Yeah! Works again and I've got the admin password so I can tweak my Sipura 2000. Seems that the problem was the proxy it was setup to use is undergoing "testing". What's cool is that you can dial 611 from the phone and get connected to tech support.

Damn it! I hate you congressors and senators! You make me mad by changing bankruptcy laws. Me strong angered at you! ARRRGHHHH! Guess me have to pay bills.

At any rate, the Canon PowerShot S70 is a joy to hold. It's ultra sleek and much smaller than I expected. Look foward to 7.1 megapixel pics of my thumb.

The thumb I will put out looking for tricks to help defray the cost of this freaking camera. Thank Zeus I got a sweet deal from Dell, but dag-nab-it this camera ain't cheap. I may be forced into taking dirty pictures of naked persons in order to pay for it.

If you need naked person type 7.1 megapixel pictures taken of you, please to be contacting me, because I have a camera that can do that.

So much dog hair

Do pugs ever stop shedding? Sheesh, hair everywhere. Staying at my folks place for who knows how long and they've got a couple of pugs. I would think that in the cold weather they'd keep as much hair as possible. Maybe when it gets colder.

"My Vote Doesn't Count"

Dummy at work told me that today. He voted, but didn't vote for president, just local elections. All because of the electoral college system we have, his lame state of Idaho only has 4. He claims that he hates the electoral college system and would rather that the popular vote would prevail. Hey dummy, you didn't vote for president, so yours didn't count period. Obama won the popular vote as well.

Transformers Blu-Ray

The movie still sucks, but it looks a lot better in Blu-Ray. I will say that you can sort of tell the bad guys from the good guys in the higher def version. Viewing the DVD version I couldn't really follow the action, or tell which robot was which. To be honest I was catching up on email and stuff during the heavy CGI scenes. Just wanted to see what's her name in a belly shirt and short skirt in high def.

I like hating coworkers

I've seen that people take credit for my work. Not difficult work, took me 15 minutes or less to do it, squeezed it out before I left on Friday. Emailed the result of my work to the coworker that requested it. Subsequently read an email where that coworker claimed that they created it, they may have edited it, but don't take full credit. Just gives me more reason to hate on folk. This particular coworker couldn't have created it ever. Best to move on if able. Will be with some folk this weekend that might have some options.

Ok, might do some work on the broke dick iPhone

I just bought a new glass screen and tools to replace it off eBay. Shit is coming from Hong Kong. Why do they call it 2G? That 2G stuff confuses me. Anyway, even if it's the wrong size it was only around 14 bucks. Isn't the 3G iPhone the second generation? They claim it fits a 4 gig iPhone, so that would be a first generation iPhone.

iPhone glass replacement. Worth it?

A local company can replace the busted glass screen on my iPhone for "... $65 (parts), $10.88 Shipping, and $35 labor...", so hmm, math, let's see 110.88. Cheaper than sending it back to Apple. Too bad I don't have some other phone lying around I could put the sim card into during the repair time. They say 5-10 days turnaround. Would they need to have my iPhone the whole time? Need to find out what it would cost to get out of my ATT contract. Then go T-Mobile and G1, depending on what it costs to dump ATT. Although, I'm liking an App on the iPhone called GasHog that helps you track how many miles per gallon you get, and what the fuel costs per mile.

That G1 looks goofy, has no standard headphone jack, doesn't play video, not truly open thanks to T-Mobile, has a 2 year contract like ATT.

Fuck it, I'm stuck. Maybe I'll get the 3G iPhone instead and sell the busted one to help offset the cost. I'll have to make sure to take blurry pictures of it.

Got my used / refurbished Apple TV

It was very easy to setup the first 3 times. Why 3 times? Well, I'm trying to use Boxee on it and that requires some work, not really, but I tried it over again when samba wasn't working. Still need some work to get samba shares to load. All the iTunes stuff works great, I can stream any media in my iTunes library fine, movies I've bought, podcasts, music I've bought. What I really want is samba shares to work. That will involve some ssh and ftp work. NitoTV may be the answer. Not a novice to ssh or ftp so I'm not scared about it, just too late in the day to tackle it tonight.

BTW: Never knew I could boot from a USB card reader.

BTW 2: The 2.2 Apple TV update included 1080p.
