And stylish too

Wouldn't you want one of these in your home? Trashcade - the cardboard arcade cabinet is hideous! I love it! Maybe I can make one out of all those free boxes I got from the Post Office. Of course if I did, it might actually look kinda nice, and very patriotic.

Free ebooks

Check it out, free ebooks on 'puter junk. I'm too lazy to actually download one and read it. Are they PDFs? Do you need to look at ads while you read? Like my nephew told me today, "You get what you pay for." He told me that after my ultra cheap VOIP phone service pooped out in mid conversation.

Dumped Qwest

It was so easy to set up my slightly used Sipura SPA-2000 and BroadVoice that I've already cancelled my land line phone service. When I called up to cancel, the friendly rep at Qwest tried to offer me metered service for only 8 bucks a month. Why is it that companies want to give you the "good deal" when you say you're leaving? Give me the good deal when I sign up for service!

How many of these will suck?

I love free stuff. The South by Southwest festival is giving away over 750 mp3s via BitTorrent, that's a lot of free music. So far I've downloaded 498 MB of the 2.63 GB file, uploaded 657 MB. Need more peers, peers who have the whole thing and fast connections to the interweb.

update: finally got 'em all. Took almost 24 hours to get the 2.63 GB file. It's actually two zipped folders. The source of the mp3s must be the bands themselves, there's a wide variety of bit rates and level of detail in the tags. Most of the bit rates are 128 kbps.

Bye Neighbor

Learned today a guy I went to High School with died recently. His family lived a block away from mine when we were in school. Wonder how he died, don't think he was ever sickly...the notice in the newspaper didn't mention the cause of death...I think he played the trumpet, or the drums...

TiVo not dead yet

Comcast and TiVo are to join forces. Maybe TiVo can stay in business. I'd switch to cable tv if I could get a dual tuner series 2 TiVo with Home Media Option. Wait, I'm building a MythTV box, who needs TiVo anymore?

MythTV + Mini ITX + HiDef = ???

Picked up my pcHDTV HD-3000 card at the post office today. The company has had such a great response from guys like me who want to buy 'em before they're illegal that they've reduced the price by $20.00.

Taking a break from wrestling with MythTV to write this post. This stuff is not plug and play, folks. If you don't know what a command line is, don't even try. My feeling so far is that the mini itx motherboard isn't going to be sufficient as the back-end of MythTV. First of all, the mini only has one PCI slot, so forget about recording two programs at once. Secondly, watching live tv (the few seconds it worked) is very choppy, but this could be due to the fact that I don't have the proper driver installed for the on-board video. I'll add updates as I progress.

update: No updates to report, won't have it ready for March Madness, darn.

iPod Shuffle showed up

I finally got the iPod Shuffle I pre-ordered when they were announced way back in ... don't rememeber ... long time ago. Worth the wait. It's teeny, the edges are kinda sharp, greasy fingerprints show really well. Why does Apple love white so much? What if I smoked? I don't want my pricey gadgets turning dingy yellow. Favorite part was putting the little pantyhose on the ear-buds. Wonder how long until I lose it?

Update: Those pantyhose covers come off real easy, lost the left one. Sucks because it hurts my delicate ears without the meager cushion they provide. What doesn't suck is that Apple includes two pairs of ear-bud nylons with the purchase of the shuffle.

Should've bought a Lotto ticket today

I pulled out in front of a cop this afternoon. Didn't see him coming, don't think he had his headlights on yet. Thought for sure he'd stop me but all he did was honk. Kinda weird because one of my tail lights doesn't work, and I had coasted through a red light to cut him off. Maybe it wasn't a real cop.

Comcast internet is active

Holy cats, this cable internet stuff is fast. Just redeemed a free song (Staring at the Sun by TV on the Radio) from pepsi on iTunes. I got the durn thing in less than 30 seconds. For kicks I did a speed test at DSL Reports, getting 385.8 KB/sec. Not too shabby.

So much dog hair

Do pugs ever stop shedding? Sheesh, hair everywhere. Staying at my folks place for who knows how long and they've got a couple of pugs. I would think that in the cold weather they'd keep as much hair as possible. Maybe when it gets colder.

"My Vote Doesn't Count"

Dummy at work told me that today. He voted, but didn't vote for president, just local elections. All because of the electoral college system we have, his lame state of Idaho only has 4. He claims that he hates the electoral college system and would rather that the popular vote would prevail. Hey dummy, you didn't vote for president, so yours didn't count period. Obama won the popular vote as well.

Transformers Blu-Ray

The movie still sucks, but it looks a lot better in Blu-Ray. I will say that you can sort of tell the bad guys from the good guys in the higher def version. Viewing the DVD version I couldn't really follow the action, or tell which robot was which. To be honest I was catching up on email and stuff during the heavy CGI scenes. Just wanted to see what's her name in a belly shirt and short skirt in high def.

I like hating coworkers

I've seen that people take credit for my work. Not difficult work, took me 15 minutes or less to do it, squeezed it out before I left on Friday. Emailed the result of my work to the coworker that requested it. Subsequently read an email where that coworker claimed that they created it, they may have edited it, but don't take full credit. Just gives me more reason to hate on folk. This particular coworker couldn't have created it ever. Best to move on if able. Will be with some folk this weekend that might have some options.

Kristen Wiig of SNL had a nose job

It's obvious. Why even debate it? If you look at Kristen Wiig's nose in "Walk Hard" and how it looks on the most recent episodes of SNL, it's clear that she had a nose job. I personally think she looks better.

AHHH, Sick of these political ads

WTF does "opposed defending marriage" mean? Does that mean he or she thinks homos should be able to get married? Fucking christians need to learn that America isn't a theocracy yet. Are there any non-religious congresspersons or senators?

Ok, might do some work on the broke dick iPhone

I just bought a new glass screen and tools to replace it off eBay. Shit is coming from Hong Kong. Why do they call it 2G? That 2G stuff confuses me. Anyway, even if it's the wrong size it was only around 14 bucks. Isn't the 3G iPhone the second generation? They claim it fits a 4 gig iPhone, so that would be a first generation iPhone.

iPhone glass replacement. Worth it?

A local company can replace the busted glass screen on my iPhone for "... $65 (parts), $10.88 Shipping, and $35 labor...", so hmm, math, let's see 110.88. Cheaper than sending it back to Apple. Too bad I don't have some other phone lying around I could put the sim card into during the repair time. They say 5-10 days turnaround. Would they need to have my iPhone the whole time? Need to find out what it would cost to get out of my ATT contract. Then go T-Mobile and G1, depending on what it costs to dump ATT. Although, I'm liking an App on the iPhone called GasHog that helps you track how many miles per gallon you get, and what the fuel costs per mile.

That G1 looks goofy, has no standard headphone jack, doesn't play video, not truly open thanks to T-Mobile, has a 2 year contract like ATT.

Fuck it, I'm stuck. Maybe I'll get the 3G iPhone instead and sell the busted one to help offset the cost. I'll have to make sure to take blurry pictures of it.

Got my used / refurbished Apple TV

It was very easy to setup the first 3 times. Why 3 times? Well, I'm trying to use Boxee on it and that requires some work, not really, but I tried it over again when samba wasn't working. Still need some work to get samba shares to load. All the iTunes stuff works great, I can stream any media in my iTunes library fine, movies I've bought, podcasts, music I've bought. What I really want is samba shares to work. That will involve some ssh and ftp work. NitoTV may be the answer. Not a novice to ssh or ftp so I'm not scared about it, just too late in the day to tackle it tonight.

BTW: Never knew I could boot from a USB card reader.

BTW 2: The 2.2 Apple TV update included 1080p.
